2011 NYC ACT-SO : Five Midwood students receive medals

The New York City Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a youth program under the administrative aegis of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). ACT-SO is an enrichment program designed to encourage high academic and cultural achievement among underserved minority high school students. Near the end of every academic year, ACT-SO students participate in an “Olympics of the Mind”. Five Midwood students competed this year in four different categories. There were three gold medalists and two silver medalists. Gold medal winners go on to compete in the National ACT-SO in Los Angeles July 20 – July 24, 2011.

  • Humera Mohammad
    received a gold medal in biology for her project "The Effect of Outcome Uncertainty on Conditional Learning". She worked under the supervision of Andrew R. Delamater of the Department of Psychology at Brooklyn College.
  • Rose-Ann Thomas
    received a silver medal in biology for her project "Effect of Extinction on Conditioned Flavor-Preference Learning in Water Deprived Rats". She worked under the supervision of Andrew R. Delamater of the Department of Psychology at Brooklyn College.
  • Nafi Shabnam
    received a gold medal in medicine for her project "The Effect of Inflammation on the Electrical Conditions in the Atrium". She worked under the supervision of Dr. Adam Saltman, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center.
  • Tik Lam Sze To
    received a gold medal in sculpture for her work entitled"Ferris Wonder". She is a student of Mr. Jonathan Pincus of the Department of Music & Fine Arts at Midwood High School.
  • Gaelle Marin
    received a silver medal in painting for her work entitled "Memories". She is a student of Mr. Jonathan Pincus of the Department of Music & Fine Arts at Midwood High School.
