  • Mandatory events are highlighted in yellow.
  • Students in this class are expected to check in weekly with their supervising teacher. General meetings with all students are rare.
  • Students are expected to check in regularly with Ms. Kramer regarding their Intel essays.

Siemens Competition in
Math, Science & Technology
  • Students are encouraged to participate in this competition.
  • Registration is done online through the College Board. Print out the "Confirmation Page" when you are finished. Also print copies of the "Mentor/Advisor Form". Be sure to obtain an application instruction booklet from your teacher.
  • Follow the guidelines set by the contest when writing your report. Your entry will "blind read" by a panel of judges who's expertise is related to your project. Papers are judged solely on the merits of the abstract and supporting documentation. The judges do not know anything else about you. Completed submissions are due at Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, NJ by 5 PM Monday, October 1, 2007.
  • Up to 300 projects are selected as semi-finalists. Up to thirty individual students and thirty teams (of 2 or 3 students) are chosen to compete at six regional competitions (MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, UT Austin and UC Berkeley). Students' names will be posted on the Siemens Foundation website Friday, October 19, 2007.
  • Winners of the regional competitions go on to the national competition in December.

St. Joseph's College
High School Poster Session

  • Students are encouraged to participate in this competition.
  • Apply online through the St. Joseph's College website by Wednesday, October 10, 2007.
  • This event is open to high school students who have completed research in any scientific area during the past year and can present their findings in a posterboard.
  • The posters will be judged by professors and/or scientific professionals and prizes will be awarded for outstanding entries.
  • The competition is held at St. Joseph's College - New York in the Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn on Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 1 PM to 5 PM. (The College is located at 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205. Click here for directions.)

  • The "Research Prize" is for completed research (seniors). The "Creativity Prize" is for proposed research (juniors). Students may not apply for both prizes in the same year.

Intel Science Talent Search
  • Students in this class must participate in this competition.
  • Obtain a copy of the Facts and Official Entry Form from your teacher. If you would like a pdf copy, you can obtain one through the Science Service website.
  • Fill in this pdf and print it for or email it to your Midwood teacher advisor.
  • The deadline for receipt of all STS entries is 8:00 PM, Wednesday, November 14, 2007. This is not a postmark deadline.
  • On Wednesday, January 16, 2008 a public announcement of the 300 Semifinalists will be made.
  • The 40 Finalists will be notified by telephone and a public announcement of Finalists will take place on Wednesday, January 30, 2008.

Otto P. Burgdorf Science Research Competition
  • Eligible papers will describe independent research carried out by students under the direction of an advisor. Team projects are not eligible. Students must be sponsored by a member of the New York Biology Teachers Association.
  • All schools submitting papers are required to provide at least one judge. Schools entering more than 3 papers must submit one judge for every 3 papers.
  • Research papers submitted will be considered by panels of judges. Thirty finalists will be selected from all the papers submitted. All finalists will present their papers at the Otto Burgdorf Conference in late April.

New York City Science and Engineering Fair
  • Students in this class must participate in this competition.
  • NYCSEF is sponsored by the New York City Department of Education and the City University of New York. All students submit a sicentific research paper in January and participate in a posterboard competition in February.
  • Register online in mid-October [confirmation needed].
  • Begin filling out the application forms as soon as possible. We recommend that you use the Quick Guide tool to help you identify which forms you will need to submit with your application
  • Application deadline: Friday, November 30, 2007. Completed applications must be received by 5 PM at the College Now offices in Manhattan (101 West 31st Street, 14th Floor). This is NOT a postmark deadline.
  • Scientific research paper deadline: Friday, January 11, 2008. Completed research papers must be received by 5 PM at the College Now offices in Manhattan (101 West 31st Street, 14th Floor). This is NOT a postmark deadline.
  • This year's Preliminary Round for all students will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 2 and 3, 2008 at The City College of New York (Manhattan).
  • The top 25 percent of student researchers from each subject category will be invited to participate in the Finals Round on Monday, March 10, 2008 at the CUNY Graduate Center.
  • Twenty students will ultimately be selected to represent New York City in May 11-17, 2008 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, GA.

Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
  • Students in this class must participate in this competition, which is similar to NYCSEF. (At one time the applications were combined. Now you must apply to the JSHS separately.)
  • Register online by Saturday, January 5, 2008. I will email you the "course enrollment key".
  • Submit your research paper electronically by Saturday, February 16, 2008.
  • Students with the best research papers will be invited to a posterboard compeition on Sunday, March 30, 2008.
  • The top students at the NYC JSHS move on to compete in the national JSHS in Orlando Florida.
  • The top students in the national JSHS move on to compete in the London International Youth Science Forum (LISYF) in London, England.

DuPont Challenge
  • This competition is mandatory for juniors and optional for seniors
  • Download and complete a copy of the application.
  • Your essay must be an original manuscript exclusively for the DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition.  Previously published articles are not acceptable. NOTE:  Must be a research paper — not based on your experimental results but only on the research you have completed.  (Seniors could use parts of their intro and discussion.)
  • Your essay must be between 700 and 1000 words, inclusive.  Your essay must have a title that appears on the first page. At the end of the essay you must include a word count.
  • Attribute all quotes, statistics, and ideas that are not your own in the body copy of your essay.  NO footnotes or endnotes.
  • Include a bibliography of your sources (reference list) on a separate page at the end of your essay.
  • Your essay must be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt standard font, on 8½ × 11 inch paper.  DO NOT include illustrations or diagrams.  DO NOT include your name, the name of your school, or research institution in the paper.
