Intel Science Talent Search
Now in its 65th year, the Intel Science Talent Search (STS) is the oldest and most highly-regarded science competition in the
United States. Midwood students have a long and distinguished record of
superior performance in this "Junior Nobel Prize". In the year 2006, Midwood had three semifinalists.

Siemens-Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition
The Siemens-Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition is a national research competition in the sciences and mathematics for high
school students. Midwood had 3 semifinalists this year, more than any other
high school in New York City.
Semifinalists
- Yuliana León
for her project "Computational Analysis of MyTH4 Domains in Myosin Proteins". She worked with Dr. Shaneen M. Singh of the Biology Department at Brooklyn
College.
- Jennifer Lien and Michael Vishnevetsky
for their team project "Novel Cancer Therapeutics: Genetically Induced Expression of PNC-28, a Potent
Antitumor Peptide Derived from the p53 Binding Domain of MDM-2". They worked with Dr. Josef Michl, of the Pathology Department at SUNY Downstate
Medical Center.
The Laureates of Tomorrow - Nobel Essay Contest
The Laureates of Tomorrow - Nobel Essay Contest is a collaboration between the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, The New York Academy of Sciences, nobelprize.org, the New York City Department of Education, and the City University of New York.
American Chemical Society Research Poster Session
On Saturday October 29, 2005, St. Joseph's College held a High School Science
Competition sponsored by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. Midwood sent 9 students to the competition and brought home 3 awards.

- Jane Yee and Kerry Li
received a 1st place award for their team project "Identification of Receptor Dimerization of a Novel Platelet Cell Adhesion
Molecule in Physiological Platelet Activation". They worked with Dr. Elizabeth Kornecki, of the Department of Anatomy and
Cell Biology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
- Daria Zainullina
received a 2nd place award for her project "Biochemical Characterization of a Chromatin-Derived Ternary Complex and Its
Implications on HIV-1 Expression". She worked with Dr. Camilo A. Parada of the Department of Molecular Biology
and Genetics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

received honorable mention for her project "Computational Analysis of Myth4 Domains in Myosin Proteins". She worked with Dr. Shaneen M. Singh of the Biology Department at Brooklyn
