NYCSEF Signature Pages

Seniors, I need your NYCSEF signature pages on or before Tuesday, December 8, 2015 so the Principal and I can sign them. Please print the Principal’s name (Michael McDonnell) for him, but do not sign or date the form (obviously). Please do the same for my name (Glenn Elert). I will sign part b as the Science/Research Teacher for all 43 seniors. The rest of the paperwork along with a complete research paper must be ready by Monday, December 14, 2015. All photocopying will be done at Midwood with the exception of pages in your report that contain color images or diagrams. Copies of those pages are the responsibility of the student.

Application for Advanced Science Research (a.k.a. 1.05)

All juniors and seniors with a currently active research placement who would like to apply for a 1.05 weighted research course (Advanced Science Research) for the fall semester of 2015 must fill out, print, sign, and present this form to their supervising teacher along with an up to date lab log. See your supervising teacher on Monday, November 30 unless you were told to do something different.

For seniors, an "active" placement in the fall is one with 16 hours (on average) of lab log entries per month for September, October, and November.

For juniors, an "active" placement in the fall is one that began any day before Thanksgiving. A placement is not official until your mentor has contacted me saying you have been accepted to work in their lab. It should also state the date you began working there. Some of you have done this and some of you have not. The official record of this is kept in the Google Docs spreadsheet called "mentors (shared)". You were all sent an invitation to this spreadsheet in October. View it and check your status. If you see a date next to your mentor’s name, you’re OK. If not, contact your mentor and ask them to email me as soon as possible.

2015 High School Physics Photo Contest

The High School Physics Photo Contest is looking for high school students who can explain physical principles through photography and writing. Photos may be entered in one of two categories and will be judged on the quality of the photo and the accuracy of the written explanation.

  • Natural photos are those that demonstrate physical concepts in everyday situations.
  • Contrived photos are those that are set up to show a particular physical concept or set of related concepts.
  • Photos with multiple images or other computer manipulation will be placed in a separate category.

I will be glad to give anyone advice on photographic composition or copy writing, but Dr. Riemersma will be supervising this competition for Midwood. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 15, 2015, but if you give Dr. R your photo for the first time on this day you will not be allowed to enter. There is a limit of 15 entries per school.

Please read the Student Rules before beginning. You may already have a photo in your archives that could be used for this competition. Look to the past winning entries for inspiration. New Horizons mission to Pluto event

On Thursday, May 14, 2015, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) will host a program highlighting NASA’s New Horizons mission — the first-ever mission to the Pluto system and the Kuiper belt. This mission, which will have its closest approach to Pluto in July 2015, will help us understand ice worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of the planet Pluto and its moons, and by venturing deeper into the distant, mysterious Kuiper belt — a relic of solar system formation.

Students will have an opportunity to listen to AMNH’s Director of Astrovisualizations, Carter Emmart, New Horizons Deputy Project Scientist Cathy Olkin, New Horizons Co-Investigator Marc Buie and, Science Operations Team, Tiffany Finley present a dynamic and richly-illustrated overview of the mission and the men and women who make it possible, leaving time for interaction and one-on-one encounters.

This event is being coordinated by Mr. Spergel. He is taking everyone in his AP Physics 1 class, but he has room for a few more students. Contact Mr. Spergel directly if you are interested. This is a field trip, so paperwork needs to be done. The group will depart period 3 on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Extra credit will be awarded to research students who participate and complete the public lecture assignment for any one of the speakers.

World Science Festival needs volunteers

The World Science Festival is an unprecedented tribute to imagination, ingenuity and inventiveness, taking science out of the laboratory and into the streets, theatres, museums, and public halls of New York City, making the esoteric understandable and the familiar fascinating. The Festival returns this year when hundreds of thousands will gather for a glorious five-day celebration of science, Wednesday, May 27 to Sunday, May 30. The 2015 Festival will feature more than fifty engaging events of all types, including mainstage programs, intimate salons, and youth and family offerings. It all culminates in the Ultimate Science Street Fair, an outdoor extravaganza taking over the area around Washington Square Park and New York University.

Volunteers are the ambassadors of the World Science Festival, serving as the face of the Festival to visitors, welcoming them and being a resource of information about the Festival and its programs. World Science Festival Volunteers support the many production teams that make the wheels of the Festival turn. They are the core upon which the Festival’s success is based.

Volunteers must…

  • Be enthusiastic and have a friendly outgoing personality.
  • Be comfortable working with people of all backgrounds, ages, and levels of familiarity with science.
  • Have great communication skills.
  • Have a passion for learning and sharing knowledge.
  • Be dedicated, commited, reliable and professional.
  • Be flexible and have a sense of humor.

The World Science Festival is a 5 day celebration, but Midwood Science students can volunteer as many days as they want to — with one exception. Thursday, May 28 is the 2015 Midwood High School Science Fair. Since this mandatory event ends sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, it doesn’t leave much time to help out at the Festival on that day.

Register for St. Joe’s

All seniors need to register for the High School Poster Session at St. Joseph’s College. You can do this before Winter Break (December 22 or 23, 2014) or on the first day after Winter break (January 5, 2015). I need to witness your registration for grading purposes. I am available periods 6–9 in the Research Room. Registration is easy. The hardest part is probably entering your project title (or maybe remembering your mentor’s email address). We will make posters during Regents week. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2015.

The annual poster session provides an opportunity for talented high school students from the metropolitan area to compete and be recognized for their research accomplishments. This event is sponsored by The New York Section of the American Chemical Society and St. Joseph’s College. The program includes:

  • Judging of posters by scientists working in industry and academia
  • Guest speaker Carlo Yuvienco, Ph.D., Department of Physical Sciences, St. Joseph’s College
  • Certificates to all participants
  • Prizes to the four winning presenters

Dr. Carlo Yuvienco holds Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from New York University and a B.E. in Chemical Engineering from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. His research focus is currently the application of engineered protein constructs for drug delivery applications.

  • Title: Protein-based Drug Delivery Agents
  • Abstract: With the advancement of technologies to probe and manipulate biophysical matter, the scientific community continues to ever better engineer biological systems with the complexity and elegance in design that is necessary to address biomedical challenges. 2014 Major Trends in Modern Cancer Research

On Thursday, November 6, 2014, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will host its ninth annual Major Trends in Modern Cancer Research lecture for high school and college students. (Members of the public are also welcome to attend.) The event will take place from 5:30–7:30 PM on the first floor of Memorial Sloan Kettering's Rockefeller Research Laboratories building (430 East 67th Street, between York and First Avenues).

Registration is easy, but finding a seat with a good view isn't. This event has gotten so popular that the folks at MSKCC needed to set up satellite viewing stations in adjacent conference rooms. Get there a bit early if possible. Light refreshments have traditionally been served before the lectures begin (pizza, chips, fruit, soda, coffee). Single use MetroCards will be made available for any student who needs one to attend.

One point of extra credit will be awarded to all students who attend and complete this assignment for any one of the speakers. (Consult the Extra Credit webpage for more info.) Official attendance is taken by group photo at the end of the event. Place your completed (typed) assignment in my mailbox in the Research Room at any time during the school day on Friday, November 7.

Junior/Senior Grading Policies for Fall 2014–15

Fall semester grading policies have finally been updated for the 2014–15 academic year and posted to the class website. All juniors and seniors should read their respective document. Grades are based primarily on attending meetings and submitting the required written material at least one business day before the meeting. Seniors are also required to successfully complete the applications for the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) and New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF).

Maker Faire needs volunteers

Maker Faire has been described as carnival sideshow meets science fair, with robots, engineers, rockets, computer geekery and body paint. Imagine, you can get all that for FREE by volunteering. Just four hours gets you a day pass, eight hours gets you in for the weekend. Learn to solder, pick locks, and screen print on fabric. See the Life-Sized Mousetrap, Coke Zero and Mentos show, and 3D printer village. Dodge Cupcake Cars. Buy a Utility Kilt.

Started in San Mateo, California in 2006, Maker Faire is the premier event for grassroots American innovation. As the World’s Largest DIY festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone — a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset. This year’s Maker Faire will be held at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing, Queens Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

You can learn about all your volunteering options here. (Volunteers are called "Travelers" at Maker Faire.) Midwood Science students who volunteer will, of course, receive extra credit. Contact Mr. Elert if you have any questions about Maker Faire in the Research class.

 

Electrochemical Devices Workshop

Dr. Sophia Suarez in the Physics Department at Brooklyn College will be conducting a two-day workshop for high school students on Electrochemical Devices: Research, Applications, and Energy on Tuesday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 2, 2014. At the workshop, you will learn how to build supercapacitors, fuel cells, and batteries. This workshop is open to current sophomores and juniors and graduating seniors. Contact any one of the research teachers if you would like to join Dr. Suarez and her team. Lunch will be provided both days. Extra credit cannot be awarded since this event takes place outside of the regular school year.

ACT-SO Reminder

Saturday, April 12th, 2014 is the Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics or ACT-SO at Wingate High School from 10:00am–5:00pm. Any student interested will need to go to registration on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at P.S. 84 in Manhattan beginning at 10:30am and lasting till about 12:00pm. Students must bring the following to registration:

  • Six copies of their research paper (seven suggested). Papers can only be 5 pages max. Similar to what we did for NYCSEF, copies of your paper can be made in Mr. Rosenfeld’s office (A200). One of these copies must be notarized. (The school treasurer, Ms. Ferrarin will take care of this. Bring your paper and your Midwood ID to room 255. She is expecting you.)
  • A one to two page autobiography (you can simply use the the autobiography that you wrote in the beginning of the year for college)
  • A small picture of yourself for identification purposes (passport type picture)
  • A copy of your poster (suggested, not necessary)

Students are allowed to work in teams. If students are in a team, only one member of the team is needed to register on Saturday, April 5th, however, an autobiography and picture are needed for both students. (No group pictures.) Also, if a student cannot make it, another student can give in the papers for them. (If you want someone else to register for you they will need your name, address, phone number, etc. so it is suggested that you register yourself.) All you need to do is drop off your papers, sign the registration forms, and leave. You can also go over your board with them if you want. (This is suggested).

Only students in the following categories can enter. Even if your project isn’t exactly in one of these categories, it might be possible to enter in a related category.

  • Biology/Microbiology
  • Chemistry/Biochemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth and Space Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Medicine and Health
  • Physics

For rules on how to format your paper go to this web page. Then click on your category to see the requirements. (They are basically all the same.) On the date of registration be sure to write under “Student Ambassador” the name of one of the Midwood recruiters: Chukwunonso Nwasike, Christopher Ayala, M. Tasnim Kabir, or Raquel Hosein.
